about

Airplanes examines what can push a desperate man to commit acts that go against his moral standing.
Through consistently asking for help from others, and receiving none, he grows bitter and realises that he can take what he needs by force.

It is a testament to the long-term detrimental effects of showing neglect to those in dire need.

The song endeavours to develop empathy in the individual, and reinforce societal values of manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga.

lyrics

I can’t afford a cigarette, so won’t you pity me
I’ve never had a roof, so i’m begging on the street
I was raised a poor man, the rich belittle me
But nothing lasts forever so enjoy your luxuries
I’ll burn it to the ground, if you give the match to me
Give a fuck who’s on the lease, of your private property
You fight for your piece, I live of what you leave
Clean or dirty money doesn’t care what you believe

I can’t afford a cigarette, a pillow for my head
I don’t want your money, give me medicine instead
They tried to disown me, to cut me natty dread
And they won’t give up on me, ‘til they see me lying dead

I’m out on my own and, sometimes it’s so lonely
Laugh if you want to, but money don’t own me
Money don’t own me
Money don’t own me
Money don’t own me

I can’t afford a cigarette, I need to find a way
With the dollars I collect from sitting out here everyday
I can’t get the things I need, I don’t have a place to stay
You get everything you want, and you can’t spare a little change
So give me everything you got, I’m not asking anymore
I’mma take what’s in your pocket, buy some rollies from the store
Get a slice of what’s for me, and a taste of what is yours
If I can get it all for free, tell me what I’m begging for

I’m out on my own and, sometimes it’s so lonely
Laugh if you want to, but money don’t own me
Money don’t own me
Money don’t own me
Money don’t own me
